Beach Access Project
|
CURRENT SITUATION
Napili Bay and Beach Foundation has been working to remediate the damage to the public beach access path, stairs, and beach shower destroyed by coastal erosion over two years: 2017 - 2019. An estimated 50,000 - 60,000 residents and Maui visitors per year use this public access point to Napili Beach.
The Public Beach Access Project will: • remove all the old concrete structures • build new Trex composite stairs to the beach • build a new, above-grade path to protect the most fragile parts of the headland |
THE COST
Private donations have been used to pay for new architectural plans for new stairs and a path that are more resilient to coastal erosion processes and spare the headland from further erosion. All County SMA permits, DLNR OCCL SPA and DLNR /BLNR permits are now in place. The building permit from Maui County for construction is in its final phase of process. All permits were privately funded. The demolition and construction of the old/new path and stairs is being funded by State, County and local grants.
NBBF has continued working with the County and State over the last several months to finalize the plans for the new public beach access stairs and path. The anticipated start date of the project is now the first week of December and is expected to take about 3 months to complete. The total cost is estimated at $250,000.00.

This project is truly a community effort and we have many folks to say “thanks” to!

Councilmember Tamara Paltin and Jim Buika (Maui County Planning Department)
for the $67,000 SMA Revolving Fund Grant, and OED West Maui Grant of $14,274.00.
And last, but not least, our NBBF Supporters who have contributed funding over the past two years for plans, permits, and project management!
NBBF greatly appreciates the help from all who pointed us to this funding to allow us to replace the old public beach access stairs and path at the south end of Napili beach. The new construction is more resilient to coastal erosion processes and protects the headland and beach from further damage. Mahalo nui loa to all who have donated to the NBBF! We are nearly there!
